"SHOULD WE KISS?"

The hall was quiet, the Guest Speaker's voice echoing across the room as she passionately delivered her topic. Students sat, some listening intently, others distracted by whispered conversations and absent thoughts. But elsewhere...hidden beneath calm faces and quiet exteriors...plans were being crafted...

“How’s it coming along with your subject? Mine is going perfectly well. He seems like a weak one. I should kiss him tonight.” Nina was saying to her two partners in crime through her  mind voice.

Zino sat still, his face a mask of calm confidence, but his thoughts churned.

“I have her seduced already,” he replied in his mind, wicked satisfaction glinting in his eyes. “I’ll engage her tonight somewhere really private. I hope to do more than kiss her. They’re not as strong as Principal Harry  projected them to be.”

A sly smile curled on his lips.

Across the row, Mira's voice cut in, laced with frustration. “I can’t say the same for the third one. I thought she would be the weak one, but she was all walled up. I couldn’t mess with her self-esteem.”

Nina’s voice sharpened. “Everyone has an entry point. Find it. You can’t afford to fail. I found an entry point with the boy. Zino, take the girl far away from him tonight. We should ensure to do that during the variety night.”

Zino's smile widened further. “Works well with my plans…”

*****
The variety night was in full swing. Lanterns glowed softly, strung delicately across the large open space where the students gathered in a wide circle. The mood was electric...a perfect balance of laughter, games, and light-hearted fun. The night was biology-themed, yet it was more about connection and camaraderie.

“Name! Name! Name of organisms that you know!” one of the teachers called out cheerfully, trying to engage the group in an educational game.

“Amoeba!” a student shouted.

“Zebrafish! That counts, right?” another chimed in.

Laughter rippled through the group. It felt like a perfect night...until it didn’t.

Layo sat cross-legged beside Amaka and Jide, trying to enjoy the moment. Amaka was giggling at something funny Jide had said, but Layo felt a strange weight pressing on her.

Across the circle, Zino sat with his Robin High friends, but his gaze was glued to her. Layo felt it, the intensity of his stare crawling over her skin like an unwelcome shadow. She tried to ignore it, to focus on the game, but she couldn’t shake the feeling.

"Why does it feel like he’s watching my every move?" She thought

Amaka noticed her distraction. “You know he’s still staring, right?” she whispered with a grin. “Maybe he has a PhD in Staringology.”

Layo forced a small smile. “Stop it,” she murmured, brushing the comment off.

Across the circle, Nina leaned toward Zino, her voice low and sharp. “Go tell the teacher to mix the students up for social interaction. It’ll give you the perfect chance to sit beside her.”

Zino nodded, his smile unwavering as he rose casually and approached one of the supervising teachers. Layo watched from a distance, her unease growing.

Moments later, the teacher clapped loudly for attention.

“Alright, everyone!” the teacher announced. “Let’s switch things up a bit for the sake of social interaction. You’re all here to make new friends, after all! Everyone, mix around...no sitting with your usual group!”

Excited murmurs and groans erupted across the gathering as students stood reluctantly, shuffling to new spots.

Layo rose with Amaka, grabbing her bag tightly. “Where should we sit?” she asked, trying to sound casual.

Before Amaka could answer, Layo found herself sitting beside Zino

“Guess we were meant to sit together,” Zino said smoothly, leaning closer.

Layo stiffened. “I guess so,” she replied quietly, forcing a polite smile.

Across the circle, Jide found himself next to Nina. His gaze immediately flickered toward Layo, and when he saw her discomfort, he frowned. Their eyes locked for a moment...a brief, silent exchange that spoke volumes.

“I’m here,” Jide seemed to say with his calm, reassuring gaze. “Just breathe.”

Layo exhaled softly, comforted by his unspoken words. But Zino's presence was still oppressive, like an unseen weight pulling her down.

“You look cold,” Zino said smoothly, pulling off his jacket. “Need this?”

“No, thank you,” Layo replied quickly, shifting slightly to put space between them.

Meanwhile, beside Jide, Nina noticed where his attention lay and nudged him playfully.

“So,” she teased, her voice full of charm. “Let's continue from where we stopped earlier...Tell me… how did you ask her out?”

Jide chuckled awkwardly, scratching the back of his head as he tried to refocus. “It’s… complicated,” he said lightly, though his thoughts remained firmly on Layo.

Across the circle, Layo could still feel Zino watching her, his presence like an unwanted shadow. Her heart whispered one clear thought.

“Why does this feel so wrong?”

Jide watched her closely, worry tugging at the edge of his thoughts. Something wasn’t right, and he knew it. Something odd was about to happen tonight!
