“Excuse us?” Amaka said sharply.

Racheal, ignoring Amaka completely, pointed a finger at her with a wave of dismissal.

“You...you may pass,” Racheal snapped. Then, turning to Layo, her expression hardened. “But as for you…”

Layo stared calmly at Racheal, unbothered by her glare.

“The audacity,” Racheal muttered under her breath.

Layo raised an eyebrow, her tone cool and calm.
“How may I help you?”

Racheal’s face twisted slightly, her words coming out with bitter frustration. “Help me? I should be asking you that.”

“What are you talking about?” Layo asked, her confusion evident.

Racheal’s voice heightened with emotion, though she tried to sound steady.
“You think you can just stroll around, batting those pretentious eyes at every guy and flirting with them?”

Amaka stepped in. “Flirt? With who?”

Racheal turned sharply, glaring at Amaka. “Zip it when I’m talking.”

“What is the meaning of this?” Layo interrupted, her patience waning. “What pretentious eyes are you talking about?”

Racheal’s tone turned accusing, her jealousy leaking into every word.
“Don’t act like a saint. You obviously aren’t one.”

From across the compound, Jide, Chinedu, and Paul noticed the commotion. Jide’s then headed over. Chinedu trailed closely behind.

“Don’t be delusional,” Racheal hissed at Layo, her voice low and spiteful. “He’ll never be yours.”

Layo didn’t flinch. Instead, she folded her arms, staring Racheal down. “Maybe you should be more direct,” she said calmly.

Before Racheal could retort, Jide appeared beside Layo, his expression questioning but gentle.

“Is everything okay, Layo?” he asked, his tone soft yet firm.

Racheal turned to Jide in disbelief, her voice stammering.
“Re...re...really, Jide?”

Amaka, seizing the opportunity, grabbed Layo’s arm. “Yes, really. Let’s go, Layo,” she said, pulling her friend along.

Layo paused briefly, shooting a parting shot at Racheal.
“Jide, hold your dog. Her leash is broken.”

Racheal’s jaw dropped, her face turning red with anger. “D-did she just refer to me as a dog?” she stammered, looking between Jide and Chinedu for support.

Chinedu shrugged, shaking his head. “You need to chill, Racheal. Cool down.”

Racheal turned on him next. “E-excuse m-me? Jide?”

Jide merely blew a gum bubble, offering her a careless shrug before jogging off toward Paul. Racheal watched him go, her frustration bubbling over.

Amaka let out a loud, excited shriek as they walked away. “Point me in the direction of a Knight in Shining Armour!”

Layo frowned, laughing at her friend’s theatrics. “A what?”

Amaka clutched her chest dramatically, ignoring her. “Girl, did you see how Jide just swooped in, looked at you sweetly, and said…” She dropped her voice to mimic Jide’s calm tone: “Is everything okay, Layo?”

Layo burst into laughter, shaking her head.

“Racheal wanted to die of embarrassment!” Amaka added gleefully. “Chai!”

“What’s her problem, anyway?” Layo asked, finally calming down.

Amaka smirked knowingly. “She’s had a crush on him since junior secondary school. But you know how it goes...he’s a hot boy, always looking for better things.”

Amaka winked playfully at Layo, who rolled her eyes. “What’s with the winking?” Layo demanded.

“You,” Amaka teased, “are that better thing.”

Layo groaned, swatting her friend on the arm. “We’re just friends.”

Amaka gave her a look. “Abeg! I’ve heard that before. First, it’s ‘we’re street neighbors,’ and now it’s ‘we’re just friends.’ Soon it’ll graduate…”

They both erupted into laughter, their voices echoing through the compound.

BACK TO PRESENT...

Layo smiled softly as the memory replayed in her mind, a bittersweet reminder of simpler days. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, pulling her back to the present. She pulled it out to see an incoming video call from her sister, Tolu.

On the screen, Tolu appeared with a bright smile. “Hello, baby sister…”
