CHAPTER 7
"SHOULD WE KISS?"

The school hall was still alive with chatter, yet it felt like a bubble had formed around Jide and Nina as she continued to engage him. Nina leaned slightly closer, her playful grin never faltering.
“You’re really good at this biology stuff,” she said, her tone light but deliberate. “Maybe we should hang out after the fair?”
Jide gave a small grin, feeling his guard drop just slightly under her charm. “Maybe we could,” he replied, his voice cautious but polite.
Meanwhile, further down the hallway, Zino’s flirtation with Layo took on a more calculated edge. His smooth demeanor, coupled with his persistent attempts to push her boundaries, made Layo uneasy. She sneezed again, her nerves betraying her.
“So,” Zino began with a confident smile, “if DNA can be exchanged through something as simple as a kiss, does that mean I’m walking around with bits of a lot of people inside me?”
He paused, flashing a sly grin.
“Because, honestly, I’ve kissed quite a few people, and I don’t think any of them would want to take back the feeling they had. They say I’m a good kisser, you know...soft, sweet lips. What about you, Layo? Have you been kissed before?”
Layo froze for a moment, caught off guard by his forwardness. A brief flashback flickered in her mind: a moment from her past, lips meeting hers, but the memory was clouded with discomfort. The face was obscured, but the feeling of regret lingered like a shadow. She shook the thought away, gathering herself.
“Yes, I have,” she said firmly, her voice carrying an edge of seriousness. “And I didn’t like it.”
Zino’s arrogant smile deepened, sensing an opportunity to keep her on edge. He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping lower.
“That’s sad,” he said smoothly. “Can I have the pleasure of changing that narrative?”
Layo’s heart raced, the depth of his words sinking in. But she refused to let herself be swept up in his charm.
“It’s not that simple,” she said, her tone steady despite the tension. “DNA exchange happens, so there is a need for responsibility in physical contact.”
Zino chuckled softly, his laugh mocking. “Responsibility? It’s just a kiss, Layo. You make it sound like it’s the end of the world. It’s not that deep.”
Layo’s gaze hardened, her voice unwavering. “There are emotional and spiritual consequences too.”
“Spiritual consequences?” Zino asked, raising an eyebrow, his sarcasm cutting through the air. “That deep, huh?”
Layo held his gaze, her conviction shining through. “A kiss can open doors you didn’t intend to open,” she said firmly.
Zino leaned in even closer, the air between them thick with tension. He unbuttoned the top of his shirt, casually revealing just enough of his collarbone to hint at something more seductive.
“Maybe some doors are meant to be opened,” he said darkly, his voice dripping with charm.
Layo felt the pull, the almost magnetic force he exuded. But her determination was stronger. She met his gaze head-on, refusing to waver.
“Some doors should stay closed, no matter the temptation,” she said, her voice strong.
Without waiting for a response, she turned on her heels and walked away. Her steps quickened, and soon she was running, needing to escape the intensity of the encounter. She didn’t stop until she reached the school field, where the open space allowed her to breathe.
Her heart raced, not just from the exertion but from the realization of how close she had come to faltering. She closed her eyes and whispered a prayer, asking for strength.
