There was a lot of chatter amongst the students during the break, but for Layo, the noise faded into the background as Zino approached her. His gait was smooth, his presence commanding, and his eyes gleamed with intent. There was an air of confidence about him that seemed almost too perfect, too calculated.
“Interesting presentation,” Zino said, his voice smooth, almost hypnotic. “Who knew science could be so... intimate?”
Layo felt her guard go up, her instincts warning her of the undertone in his words. Yet, she couldn’t deny the strange pull she felt toward him.
“It’s important to understand the consequences of our actions,” she replied, trying to keep her tone steady.
Zino stepped closer, his grin widening as his voice dropped to a more flirtatious tone. “Maybe. But sometimes, the consequences are worth it.” He paused, his eyes scanning her face before landing on her lips. “You’re beautiful—tall, too. Not a lot of girls like you around. You’ve got cute lips. I wouldn’t mind a kiss to back up your claim. I’m ready to be your subject. You said DNA can be transferred through kissing, please I would love a kiss , so you can share some DNA of your cuteness.”
Layo felt a chill run down her spine, her thoughts racing. Before she could respond, Jide appeared at the far end of the hallway. Spotting Zino, his expression darkened.
Jide turned to Amaka, his voice firm. “I’ll be right back.”
He started toward Layo, but before he could reach her, Nina intercepted him, stepping into his path with a sly smile.
“Awesome presentation,” Nina said smoothly, her tone almost teasing. “You Crestwood kids are all books and looks. My name’s Nina, by the way.”
Meanwhile, Amaka was coming up the stairs towards the hall, but met Mira standing by the stairs... a smug smile on her face.
“So, you’re the ‘unseen leg’ of the trio, huh? Just like me. How does that feel?” Mira asked, her voice smooth and casual.
Amaka frowned. “What are you talking about?”
Mira’s tone was casual, but her words carried weight. “You know... always being in the background. Not the leader, not the one people notice first. Just there, keeping the balance. But no one ever really pays attention to your part, do they?”
Amaka stiffened. She could sense the mind games Mira was trying to play, but she stood her ground. “I don’t need to be seen to know my worth. We’re a team for a reason,” she replied coldly.
Mira smirked, leaning in slightly. “Hmm, if you say so. But you have to admit, it must get exhausting... playing support while others get the spotlight. Doesn’t it bother you that Layo and Jide are always in front?”
Amaka’s expression hardened. “We all have our roles. And trust me, I’m good at mine.”
Mira’s voice dropped to a whisper, her tone laced with intent. “Are you? Or are you just pretending it doesn’t bother you? You know, you could be more... if you wanted to. You don’t have to keep holding them up while they shine.”
Amaka’s patience wore thin, but she refused to let Mira see her crack. “I don’t need your advice. I know who I am, and I don’t need to tear others down to feel important,” she said steadily.
Miracle chuckled softly, her casual tone returning. “Maybe... or maybe you’re just scared of what you could be if you stopped playing second fiddle.”
Amaka felt that!
