Layo, Jide, and Amaka reached their project display booth. Layo was still shaken from her encounter with Zino, but she was making a deliberate effort to push his thoughts aside.
Layo looked at the topics of other schools on the banners that hung at their booths, and without a doubt she knew their own topic was a winning topic already, although it was looking weird to other students. The theme of the fair was "Understanding the Intricate Biology behind Human Connections". Each school was given the liberty to speak on any topic along that line.
Her School ; Crestwood had chosen to speak on 'The Biology Behind Kissing and DNA Exchanges.' A topic birthed out of experience.
Around them, students gathered, some giggling at the topic, clearly more interested in the romance than the science. Layo felt a mix of excitement and distraction as she watched the crowd.
“This is going to be epic! Our project will blow their minds,” Jide said, his eyes lighting up with enthusiasm.
Layo gave a slight smile, though her mind seemed somewhere else. “Yeah… as long as they focus on the science and not just the romance behind it,” she replied, trying to stay focused.
Amaka grinned, leaning in with a playful nudge. “Oh, but you know they’ll jump straight to the romance...especially once we start talking about kissing.” She lowered her voice. “And speaking of focus, Layo, it seems there’s someone else messing with your focus.”
Layo blinked, a bit thrown off. “What do you mean?”
Amaka whispered, teasing, “You’ve been eyeing that Robin High boy. But while you’re busy getting lost in his gaze…let me remind you that Jide, your ex, is just meters away.”
Layo tensed up, trying to suppress the flood of emotions Amaka’s words stirred. She glanced over at Jide, who was adjusting their display materials. Though focused on the task, she knew he’d been keeping an eye on her. Before she could stop herself, her gaze drifted back to Zino, who was staring at her with that same intense look that had shaken her earlier. The spell was broken only when Amaka nudged her again, pulling her back to reality.
“Layo, stop being so obvious!” Amaka whispered, amused. “You don’t know how to hide it when you’re crushing on someone ooo. Remember how you were all eyes on Jide?”
“I’m not crushing… it’s nothing like that,” she muttered, trying to sound convincing.
But Amaka grinned, unconvinced. “Jide’s already noticing you’re distracted, and don’t think I didn’t catch that whole moment with this Zino guy earlier. If you keep this up, Jide and I will have to present the whole thing without you. I swear, after this competition, I’ll personally get this Zino guy's number for you!”
“I don’t need his phone number, Amaka.” She sneezed suddenly.
" Bless you..." Amaka said
" Thank you" Layo replied
Taking another breath, she whispered to herself..
"Focus, Layo. Just focus."
Yet her attempt at concentration failed as Jide, noticing her distraction, turned his attention to her, concern evident on his face.
“Layo, are you okay?” Jide asked, his voice gentle, but his gaze intense as if searching for an answer beyond her words.
Layo blinked, snapping out of her thoughts and forcing a smile. “Yeah… I’m fine. Just… just trying to stay focused, that’s all.”
Jide didn’t look entirely convinced, and Amaka, observing the tension between them, watched with a knowing smile.

“Welcome to the 5th Annual Biology Fair,”
The Head Judge took to the stage, her voice warm and welcoming as she addressed the judges, teachers, and eager students.
“This weekend, we’ll witness incredible presentations on topics that help us understand the intricate biology behind human interactions. Let’s give it up for our first school—BrightStar Academy!”
As the crowd clapped, Aisha and her team from BrightStar Academy confidently stepped up, beginning their presentation on DNA exchange during physical contact. Their well-researched project captured the audience’s attention.
Aisha smiled at the crowd, her voice clear and poised. “We all know that DNA makes us who we are, but did you know that even brief contact, like a handshake, can lead to the transfer of DNA? Forensic scientists use this in criminal investigations. What we touch, leaves a trace.”
Another student from her team added, “Our research shows that prolonged physical interactions lead to even more significant exchanges of DNA, creating lasting biological connections.”
Amaka leaned in close to Layo and Jide, whispering “Sounds like handshakes just became a little more intimate. We must be careful who we shake hands with these days.”
Layo chuckled, finding herself impressed by the BrightStar team’s presentation. “I like them. This ties in perfectly with our project,” she replied, her excitement renewed.
As Aisha’s team wrapped up, Layo’s gaze drifted to the crowd, where she spotted Zino and a female classmate from Robin High. They were watching the presentation with smug expressions. Zino suddenly looked in her direction and smiled seductively at her. Layo felt the air on her neck stand...

From where Zino sat, he could tell Layo was already falling for him. His stares were intentional. He was purposely staring at her and sending seductive messages into her spirit. He was a charmer. He knew how to charm girls. Girls loved confident boys, so whenever girls see a boy who is confident enough to stare at them unwaveringly , they become shy and get conquered.
He was going to conquer her soon. Immediately after the first session, he was going to find her and make his move.
Nina suddenly broke his line of thought as she intercepted him in his mind.
" How is it going?" Nina asked him through their minds. They didn't have to open their mouths to talk.
In Zino's mind, his voice echoed, “She’s already distracted by me.”
Mira the third student from Robin High joined the mind conversation....
“The earlier the better. We only have 48 hours to do what we have to do remember?”
" Is forgetfulness even an option?" Zino replied

Layo shivered slightly, feeling the intensity of Zino's gaze even from across the room. She didn’t know why, but something about him unsettled her, like he was breathing down her neck and oddly, she was becoming attracted to him in a way she wish he could hug her tightly in that moment.
Something was up! She could feel it!
