"SHOULD WE KISS?"

Layo and Amaka were still standing by the colored field, Layo clutching her laptop tightly as her mind wandered, trying to understand why the Robin High student had such an effect on her. Meanwhile, Amaka’s eyes darted eagerly, scanning the crowd for more signs of unfolding drama.
Just then, Jide approached with his usual confident stride, flashing his signature smile as he reached them. Layo felt a gentle tug at her heart. There was still something between she and Jide, but clearly not as mind grabbing like what just happened few minutes earlier.
“Layo, Amaka! You two ready for this?” Jide asked, his smile broad.
Layo, slightly distracted, glanced up and managed a small smile. “Yeah… just taking in the scene.”
Amaka nudged her playfully. “Taking in more than just the scene,” she teased. “Admit it...you’re hoping to spot that handsome Robin High student, because I am! I can’t wait to see the drama that will unfold around him.”
Layo shot her a sidelong look, while Jide glanced over his shoulder in the direction Amaka had pointed. Layo sensed a flicker of jealousy on Jide’s face, a subtle reminder of the history they shared...a connection undeniable and close to the surface.
“Let’s focus on the fair, shall we?” Layo said firmly, trying to bring Amaka’s attention back to the real reason they were there.
Amaka smirked, unable to resist. “Sure, sure. Fair first, feelings later,” she said with a mischievous smile.
Layo’s mind wandered again.
" I should be excited like everyone else… I should be focused on the fair… so why does it feel like something is off?"
Jide noticed her absentmindedness and gently placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Layo, are you okay?” he asked.
She took a breath, trying to shake off the unsettling feeling.
“Something feels off… I can feel it in my spirit,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jide squeezed her hand gently, his voice steady. “You know our presentation at this fair is important, right? It’s going to set a lot of people free. That’s probably why the devil’s lurking around, making you feel this heaviness. But remember, we’re in this together. I got you.”
She responded with a grateful smile. “Thank you,” she replied softly, feeling a bit more grounded.
With a serious tone, Jide asked, “Have you girls registered your names yet?”
Layo and Amaka exchanged a sheepish look, both replying in unison, “Not yet!”
Jide rolled his eyes playfully. “Go do that and join me in the hall. I’ll grab us some good seats.”

As they walked to the registration area on the school field, Layo and Amaka joined the line of students waiting to sign in. Unbeknownst to them, nearby, Zino...the very topic of Amaka’s earlier excitement...stood chatting with two girls from Robin High, Nina and Mira.
Amaka finished signing her name and stepped aside for Layo to write hers. Just as Layo was about to move on, Zino broke away from his friends and deliberately walked toward her.
He bumped into her, his piercing gaze locking onto hers. The intensity in his eyes and his slight, half-smile sent a shiver through her, leaving her speechless.
In the process, he stepped on her shoe, adding to her flustered state.
"Who… is this guy… and what is he doing to my heart? Could he be my soulmate?" Layo’s thoughts raced, her heart pounding.
“So sorry… my bad…” Zino murmured softly, his voice low and smooth, a tone so gentle it took her by surprise...Not the usual barritone voice expected from someone that tall.
Layo, suddenly aware of the rapid beat of her heart, managed a shaky smile. “It’s okay…” she said.
But Zino wasn’t done.
“Oh no! So clumsy of me,” he said playfully, pulling out a pristine white handkerchief. To everyone’s surprise, he knelt and began to wipe her shoe with exaggerated care.
Around them, a few students in the crowd reacted with soft gasps and whispers, a chorus of “Aww…”
Layo, mortified, shook her head. “Please stop! You don’t have to…”
Despite her protests, Zino continued his act with a hint of mischief in his smile. Amaka stood there, wide-eyed and speechless, while Layo, her heart pounding, quickly turned and walked off, trying to escape the attention.
Amaka caught up to her, still in disbelief. “Did that… did that really just happen?” she whispered, looking back over her shoulder at Zino.
As they moved away, Layo overheard a girl from Brighterstar Academy whispering to another, her tone hushed and awestruck. “That must be the Zino from Robin High.”
Zino… Layo’s mind lingered on his name, but she tried to push it aside. They had a fair to focus on, not a mysterious boy from another school who somehow knew how to shake her 'steeze' and 'composure'.
The air around them was filled with laughter and chatter, yet for Layo, everything felt strangely still, like something significant was about to unfold in her life.
