Nina watched Jide closely as he drifted back from his thoughts...
“Your story feels like something from a storybook,” Nina said softly, her words deliberate. “Every great love story comes with its own conflict. Was there no love triangle? No other boys who liked her? I mean, she’s quite a sight, you know. I’ve already noticed my classmate seems to be smitten by her—his name is Zino.”
Jide shifted slightly.... “It was the other way around. There was this other girl... Rachael.”

The bell rang loudly, signaling the end of the day. The chaos in the class grew loud.
Layo stood up from her seat, gathering her books into her arms. Jide walked toward her, weaving through the desks with purpose.
“Ready to leave?” Jide asked casually as he reached her.
“Yeah,” Layo replied, slinging her bag over her shoulder. “My mum’s always on time. Besides, it’s Wednesday, and as you know…”
“Church,” Jide finished, smirking slightly.
“Yes,” Layo confirmed with a smile. “I need to get ready.”
Jide raised an eyebrow curiously. “Is church fun?”
Layo paused, turning to him. “What do you mean?”
“I mean,” Jide clarified, “you always seem so excited when you talk about it.”
“It’s fun because of who I’m going to spend my time with at church,” Layo said brightly.
Jide’s brows furrowed slightly. “Oh? Who’s that?”
Layo smiled, her voice soft but firm. “Jesus, of course.”
Jide blinked, exhaling in relief as he chuckled. “Jesus?”
“Yes,” Layo replied, her smile unwavering. “You should come sometime. We have a summer camp for teens, and I promise you..it’s fun.”
“I see,” Jide said thoughtfully. “I’ll think about it. For now, let me walk you to the school gate.”
“Thank you,” Layo said softly, smiling at him.
Jide moved to help her pick up one of her books just as Rachael approached, her face tight with jealousy.
“Jide,” Rachael called out sharply.
Both Jide and Layo turned toward her.
“Can you hang out with me as usual before my driver gets here?” Rachael asked, trying to sound casual. “He might be running late today.”
Jide hesitated, glancing at Layo before answering. “Uhhh… Sorry, but not today.”
Layo quietly finished packing her bag as Racheal’s face fell into a slight frown.
“Ready?” Jide asked Layo, ignoring Racheal’s stare.
“Yes,” Layo answered, and together, they walked out of the classroom.
Rachael watched them leave, her jealousy practically radiating off her.
*******
The next day, Rachael stood by the side of the school field arms crossed, her gaze fixed on Jide who was playing football with his team mates.
When Jide noticed her standing there, he jogged over, wiping sweat from his forehead.
“Rachael,” he greeted, slightly out of breath.
She handed him a towel. “What would you do without me?”
Jide chuckled, taking the towel. “Thanks.”
Racheal’s expression turned serious. “I’m upset.”
“Your driver isn’t here yet?” Jide asked, wiping his face.
“Obviously,” she replied, her tone was sharp, “but that’s not why I’m upset.”
Jide frowned. “What’s wrong? I have to get back to the field.”
Rachael hesitated, her voice softening as she stared at him. “I can’t believe you’d rather hang out with that girl than with me. We’ve been friends way before she came into the picture.”
“You mean Layo?” Jide asked, his tone calm.
“Yes,” Rachael replied quickly.
“She’s cool,” Jide said simply. “I like her company.”
“And?” Rachael pressed, her voice trembling slightly.
“And I like her,” Jide admitted.
“As what?” Racheal’s voice grew sharper.
Jide sighed, shaking his head lightly. “See, Rachael, I think you should put all this energy into calling your parents and getting your driver here as soon as possible.”
“Jide…” Rachael began, but Jide was already jogging back to the field.
“I have to go,” he called over his shoulder. “See you tomorrow.”
Rachael watched him disappear into the game, frustration evident on her face.

BACK TO PRESENT
Layo sat on the field, her knees pulled to her chest. Her mind lingered over the same flashback, she was thinking about Rachael as well.
*****
FLASHBACK....
“It’s almost break over,” Layo muttered to herself.
She and Amaka strolled across the school premises, chatting lightly as students bustled around them.
Suddenly, Rachael and Prisca stepped into their path, blocking their way.
Amaka, never one to back down, folded her arms and raised a brow.
“Excuse us?” Amaka said, her voice was sharp.
