"SHOULD WE KISS?"

“Well, it wasn’t long before circumstances pulled us together again,” he replied, his voice holding a hint of pride. “And this time, I was pretty smart about it.”

Nina laughed lightly...

“Oh Really! Tell me your smart moves”

Jide leaned back slightly, his smile softening as he met Nina’s gaze. He opened up more to her...

*******
Jide had sat with Paul and Chinedu in the Biology lab awaiting their Biology Teacher; Mrs Helen...Their loud voices overshadowed other voices in the room.

It wasn’t long before Layo walked in, holding her books tightly to her chest.

Chinedu, always quick to stir trouble, nudged Jide with a mischievous smirk. “Look, look… Mrs. Jide is walking in with 100% steeze and composure.”

Paul burst out laughing, drawing Jide’s attention. Layo, who caught wind of their teasing, stiffened. Feeling  her heart almost jumping out of her chest, she instinctively turned back toward the door, considering an escape.

Before she could take another step, Mrs. Helen’s voice rang out, her presence silencing the class almost immediately.

“Good afternoon, class.”

“Good afternoon, ma'am,” they chorused.

Layo sighed and took her seat as Mrs. Helen began writing BIOLOGY on the whiteboard. Jide was busy staring at her. He didn’t look away when she caught him. Instead, he gave a small, knowing smile. Layo turned back sharply, her heart doing an unwelcome flip.

“Good news, students,” Mrs. Helen began, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “The Biology Fair that we thought wasn’t going to happen this year has been confirmed. It will take place during midterm, and your class will represent the school.”

A ripple of excitement passed through the room as murmurs spread.

“This year’s fair centers on the intricate biology behind human interactions,” Mrs. Helen continued. “We, as humans, are social creatures inextricably bound up in a web of human relations. I want the entire class to come up with something enlightening along those lines—how interactions between humans can alter our DNA, physical contact and the exchange of DNA, genetics, and social interaction…and three of you will be representing the class and school...Jide, Layo and Amaka..."

Before she could finish, Paul, as always, couldn’t resist a jab.

“Ma, is kissing part of Biology? Because right now, that’s the trending topic Jide and Layo could be talking about.”

The class erupted with laughter. Mrs. Helen turned sharply to Paul, though there was a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.

“Paul, stop being naughty. But you are right,” she admitted, her voice stern but amused. “Kissing can be discussed from a biological aspect as it is a form of human social interaction. That’s a very interesting topic. Get back to me with your ideas. You have two weeks until midterm.”

*****
Simultaneously, Layo was going over the exact memory  on the field. She remembered that after the Biology Class she had avoided any form of contact with Jide.

A few hours later, School was over and she walked alongside Amaka towards the car park.

“If I could break Paul’s head on your behalf, I would,” Amaka said dramatically. “He jokes too much. Honestly, it can be really annoying.”

“Yeah,” Layo replied, though her tone was distracted.

Her attention was already elsewhere—on Jide, who stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets, waiting for her. She stiffened, her steps faltering. Amaka noticed immediately.

“Seriously? You’re just going to act suspicious every time you see Jide?” Amaka teased, raising a brow.

“I’m doing nothing of the sort,” Layo shot back, defensive.

“Says the girl who looks like she wants the ground to open up and swallow her whole.”

Layo groaned. “It’s just…”

“Girl, don’t slack. Let’s go.”

Before Layo could protest, Amaka grabbed her arm, dragging her forward. Jide greeted them with a small smile.

“Hey. Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” Layo replied quickly, already trying to walk past.

Jide caught her wrist gently. “Can I talk to you?”

Layo’s eyes widened as Amaka glanced between them, looking intrigued. “I’ll wait around,” Amaka said with a wink before slipping away.

Layo quickly pulled her wrist free. “Are you avoiding me?” Jide asked softly.

“No.”

“You sure?” Jide pressed. “Because ever since Mrs. Lydia used us as an example in class, you’ve pretty much avoided me.”

Layo hesitated. “Well, in truth… it was awkward how she used us as an example. Plus, your friend isn’t helping matters.”

“Yeah, ignore Paul. He’s a clown.”

Layo couldn’t help but smile. “No cap.”

Jide laughed. “I mean, it was awkward, yeah, but I’m glad it happened that way. At least it got us talking.”

“Really?” Layo asked, surprised.

“Yes,” Jide replied sincerely. “I don’t think we’ve had a conversation as long as this before. You’re usually the quiet type who hardly talks to anyone...except Amaka. So, it’s nice talking to you. Plus, we have a project to work on.”

A small smile tugged at Layo’s lips. “It sure is. Sorry for avoiding you. I didn’t know how you felt about it.”

“It’s cool,” Jide said, stretching his hand toward her. “So… friends?”

Layo hesitated for only a moment before taking his hand. “Friends,” she said.

Jide smirked mischievously, leaning in slightly. “Mrs. Jide.”

Layo glared at him playfully. “Too soon?” Jide asked with a grin. “Sorry. So, as the very studious one among us, I think you should come up with our Biology Fair presentation.”

Layo laughed, shaking her head. “I’ll let you know what I come up with.”

As they both laughed, Layo had felt a new kind of ease settle between them. Whatever awkwardness had been lingering  had  melted away, replaced with a beautiful familiarity.
