Jide’s small smile lingered as he recalled the memory Nina had pulled him back into...

The classroom was quiet, save for the steady scratching of pens on paper and Mrs. Lydia’s voice as she wrote on the whiteboard. The topic was Civic Education: Citizenship.
Most of the students listened attentively, but Layo sat a few rows ahead of Jide, clearly distracted. Her gaze was distant, her mind wandering elsewhere.
“Layo!” Mrs. Lydia’s sharp voice broke through the haze. Layo jolted upright in her seat, her heart racing as all eyes turned to her.
“Yes...Yes ...ma?” Layo stammered, embarrassment written all over her face.
“You’re distracted,” Mrs. Lydia observed, giving her a stern look. Then, with a slight smile, she turned to the class. “Now, let’s say, for example, Layo marries Jide here, who is also Nigerian...”
The room erupted into murmurs and soft laughter.
“What?!” Layo’s eyes widened as she exchanged a startled glance with Jide, who looked just as surprised.
Mrs. Lydia continued, unfazed by the reactions. “If they have their child in the UK, the child would be a citizen of the UK, not them. Is that clear?”
“Yes, ma,” the class chorused, with Paul’s voice ringing out louder than the rest.
“Perfectly clear, ma!” Paul added with a cheeky smile.
“Sit down, Layo,” Mrs. Lydia instructed, her tone softening. Layo sank back into her seat, desperately wishing she could disappear.

The bell had rung, and the classroom had turned into a lively mix of chatter and laughter. Layo sat at her desk, furiously scribbling in her notebook, hoping to drown out the teasing that still lingered.
Paul sauntered over, his smile mischievous.
“Hello, Mrs. Jide,” he teased, his voice loud enough to draw laughter from the nearby students.
Jide, who had been pretending to focus on his notes, glanced up, his face a mixture of amusement and embarrassment.
“Go away, Paul,” Layo muttered, burying her face in her hands.
Paul wasn’t deterred. “What is it? Don’t you want to be my friend’s wife?” he pressed, clearly enjoying her discomfort.
Amaka, seated beside Layo, rolled her eyes. “Ignore him,” she advised, her tone unimpressed.
Paul eventually walked back to his seat, but not before hitting Jide playfully on the shoulder. “You’re one lucky guy,” he joked.
From the corner of the room, Rachael watched the exchange with a sour expression. She turned to Paul, her tone sharp.
“That’s not funny, Paul,” she snapped.
Paul shrugged. “I think it is.”
“Enough,” Jide finally spoke, his voice firm. “Cut it out.”
Paul and Chinedu weren’t ready to let the matter rest, though. Chinedu leaned over and whispered something into Paul’s ear, prompting a burst of laughter from both of them.
They stood up and walked to the front of the class, earning curious glances from their classmates.
“Attention, please!” Paul called out, clapping his hands for emphasis.
The room quieted down, and Chinedu cleared his throat dramatically.
“My friend, Mr. Handsome over here, and recently declared eligible by our Civic teacher...” he began, gesturing towards Jide.
The class burst into laughter, with Jide rolling his eyes.
Chinedu continued, grinning from ear to ear. “He’s ready to be lips deflowered!”
Paul joined in, his voice dripping with mock seriousness. “So, if your lips are worthy and kissable, come and register with us.”
The class roared with laughter, and even Jide couldn’t hide his smile, though he tried to maintain his composure and 'steeze'.
“Behave like people with sense,” Jide muttered, shaking his head.
Layo glanced nervously at Amaka, who nodded reassuringly. “Don’t worry,” Amaka whispered. “They’ll get tired soon.”
Chinedu and Paul returned to their seats, exchanging high-fives and chuckles as the class slowly returned to its usual buzz. The teacher had sown a seed she wasn't even aware of.
