CHAPTER 11
"SHOULD WE KISS?"

Nina’s Probing question had sent him back to two weeks back… he remembered how alive the classroom had been and though they were about 15 in class, it felt like it was just him and Layo that were in class as Layo who sat a few rows ahead couldn’t resist glancing over her shoulder at him. He also, though he sat with his two friends; Paul and Chinedu was stealing glances at her.
Chinedu was the first to notice Layo’s glances, nudging Paul with a knowing smirk. “Speaking of staring,” he teased, “Layo can’t keep her eyes off Mr. Handsome over here.”
Jide frowned, trying to appear indifferent, but his lips betrayed him as it broke into a tiny smile“What? Nah, nothing like that,” he said, brushing off the comment.
Paul leaned in, grinning mischievously. “What what? Come on, Oga, do you like her or not?”
Jide laughed, shaking his head. “Fashi abeg.”
Paul wasn’t convinced. “Look at him, Chinedu. He’s blushing! Oga is catching feelings.”
“Fashi abeg,” Paul mimicked, his voice a playful echo of Jide’s. “‘I’m not into her...’ Yeah, right.”
Despite his protests, Jide couldn’t help but steal another glance at Layo. She seemed completely absorbed in her notes, oblivious to their banter. A small, secretive smile tugged at his lips.
Back to Present – Inside the Auditorium
Nina noticed the distant look in Jide’s eyes, the way his smile softened as though he were savoring a sweet memory.
“I don’t believe you,” Nina said softly. Her voice was gentle but insistent. “Your eyes tell me something else. It’s either there was a thing in the past... or you wish for something in the future. Am I right?”

Jide sighed, his small smile lingering. “Well... there was a ‘was,’” he admitted.
Nina saw a break... “Oh my, what happened? What’s the story?”
Jide had an hesitant look, it was clear he was debating how much to share. Nina didn’t back down.
“Come on, Jide. We’re on break. Let’s talk about something other than Biology,” she pressed with a sly grin. “Let’s discuss the chemistry of the heart... your heart. What went wrong?”
Jide hesitated, his gaze shifting once more toward the door. Finally, he let out a small laugh, scratching his full hair. “Okay... I’ll summarize,” he said, his tone lighter. “We’re street neighbors and classmates, but we never really talked. Honestly, I’ve always had a crush on her. And I think, well... maybe she felt the same.”
He laughed lightly, a touch of nostalgia in his voice. “Funny thing is, I’d always time myself to come out when she threw the trash, just so I could see her face—even though I saw her every day in class.”
Nina’s smile widened. “Awwnn... that’s so cute. So, what actually got you two talking?” Unlike Zino she was holding a much longer conversation with her own subject. With the established Conversation, Jide had opened the door of his heart to her, and as soon as she gained more entrance into it, she could do more to the state of his heart and eventually his life.
She needed to go harder…
“Come on, tell me how you both started talking!”
Jide’s smile softened as he drifted further into his memories.
