CHAPTER 10
"SHOULD WE KISS?"

As Inspired by the Living WORD
Layo sat quietly on the field, her knees drawn to her chest. Her teacher’s words kept playing back in her head.
"Remind yourself of the Word of God… Remind yourself of the mistakes of the past and the consequences…"
She reached into her bag, pulling out her phone. With trembling fingers, she opened her Bible app and typed Songs of Solomon 8:1-4. As the verses appeared on the screen, she read them softly to herself.
“If only you were to me like a brother who was nursed at my mother’s breasts, then if I found you outside, I would kiss you, and no one would despise me…” she read quietly.
Her voice faltered as she paused to reflect.
“Hmm, kissing someone who is not a sibling and I am not married to is wrong. It says here that kissing someone outside that context can bring shame and disdain. Hmm…”
She imagined the scandal if she were caught kissing Zino. Her mother’s disappointed face flashed in her mind, followed by the judgmental whispers of her schoolmates.
" And by Kissing one's relative, I am sure it's a platonic one, how much more if one is caught tongue kissing a stranger" she reasoned.
She continued reading aloud, “Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you, do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.”
Layo leaned back...
"Layo, wait to awaken these feelings for the right time… for the right person…” she said to herself.
“Remind yourself of the mistakes of the past and the consequences…” Mrs Helen's voice broke through her thoughts again.

TWO WEEKS EARLIER
Layo stood at her gate, phone pressed to her ear, speaking excitedly with Amaka. She held a trash bag in one hand as she tried to convince Amaka to join their upcoming summer camp.
“Amaka, I promise you, you’ll have so much fun,” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “Our teen summer camps are always the best!”
Amaka’s voice came through the phone, skeptical but amused. “Fun? Redefine what fun means to you?”
Just then, Layo looked up and froze. Jide was walking by. He smiled and waved at her. Panicking, Layo waved back...forgetting she was holding the trash bag.
“Oh no…” she muttered under her breath, her face flushing crimson as Jide walked away, clearly amused.
“Are you there?” Amaka asked through the phone.
Layo groaned. “Oh my God! I think I’m going to die of embarrassment. I just waved a trash bag at Jide!”
Amaka burst into laughter, her voice ringing through the phone. “Aww, won’t that be so sweet in your love story? When you’re telling your future kids… ‘I waved a trash bag at your dad!’”
“It’s not funny!” Layo shot back, bending down to place the trash bag in the bin. Her cheeks burned with a mixture of mortification and amusement as Amaka continued laughing.

Layo came out of the memory with a small smile tugging at her lips. The embarrassment of that moment seemed almost comical now, but the lesson it carried felt more significant. “I’ve been here before,” she thought to herself. “I’ve faced this kind of temptation before..."

Back in the Auditorium, Nina was still on Jide's case. Her eyes studying him with calculated interest. Despite her attempts to flirt, his focus was clearly elsewhere. He kept glancing toward the door, his body tense, his mind elsewhere.
“Your presentation partner…” Nina began, her tone teasing. “She’s your girlfriend, right?”
Jide’s head snapped toward her, his expression guarded. “No,” he said flatly, turning back toward the door.
Nina raised an eyebrow, her lips curling into a sly smile. “Your eyes say differently,” she challenged. “Come on, Jide… what’s the story? You don’t keep looking out for a girl like that unless she means something. Or maybe... there was something?”
Jide sighed, leaning back against the wall. For a moment, her words struck a chord, and his mind wandered back to a memory…
