"This weekend is going to be lit!" Amaka exclaimed. "I can feel it in my blood!"
Amaka’s energy was far higher than that of their surroundings.
The Crestwood College compound was quiet, unlike its usual, lively atmosphere on a typical school day. With most students away for midterm break, only about fifty people remained on campus, along with the school staff. All students were at home with their families, except for Layo, Amaka, Jide, and a few others from neighboring schools attending the Biology Fair hosted by Crestwood.
Banners for the fair were hung around the campus at strategic spots, and students from different schools were trickling out of the hostels, filling the air with a light but lively buzz of excitement. This was the event everyone had been anticipating, and there was an unmistakable sense that this weekend would be unforgettable.
Layo and her best friend, Amaka, walked side by side, Layo’s attention glued to her laptop as she checked her research notes. Crestwood College was the host school, and they had a reputation to uphold—they were determined to win the fair as they had in previous years. Crestwood was known as the best school in the city, and adding another trophy to their achievements was non-negotiable.
Amaka, on the other hand, could barely contain her excitement. "I can’t wait to see all the drama that’s going to unfold with all these new faces," she said, her eyes wide with anticipation. "People are going to be catching feelings left and right. I can’t wait to see the finest boy at this fair and watch the girls fall like a pack of cards for him."
Layo glanced up briefly, giving her friend a faint smile before returning to her work. "Amaka, breathe," she teased. "Maybe you should focus more on the Biology Fair than on the ‘feelings fair’ going on in your head."
Amaka rolled her eyes, laughing. "Feelings fair! That’s perfect! But did you hear the girls from the other schools in the dormitory? It’s going to be like a movie with all these new boys showing up."
As part of the fair, the visiting students were staying in the school dormitory for the weekend. Layo and Amaka shared a room with a few girls from a nearby girls-only school, and their roommates had spent the previous night talking about a boy from Robin High named Zino. From what Layo gathered, he was tall, dark, and ruggedly cute—a fact their roommates couldn’t stop gushing about.
Shaking her head, Layo tried to stay focused. "Feelings are for later, remember?" she said playfully. "Right now, we’ve got a fair to win, not a love story to watch."
But then, her smile faded, a thought creeping into her mind. "Amaka, I had this weird dream last night," she said, worry evident on her face. "I was falling off a really high ladder… just dropping. It felt so real."
Amaka, ever the jokester, waved it off playfully. "Sounds to me like you need to avoid any ladder-climbing tasks today," she teased. "We don’t want you breaking those pretty legs of yours."
Layo rolled her eyes, then turned to her friend more seriously. "Come on, Amaka. You know that’s not what the dream means. It’s a bad sign. I’m about to compete at the fair, and then I get a dream like that? What do you think it means?"
Amaka gave her a knowing smile. "I know what it means, Layo… but let’s not dwell on it. I’m usually the scared one, so don’t let fear creep in. You’ve been praying, right? Just keep praying and focus on positivity. No need to let a dream shake you up before the fair."
Layo sighed, grateful for the friend God had blessed her with. Despite Amaka’s lighthearted personality, she always knew how to offer encouragement when Layo needed it most. "Yeah… I just need to stay focused," she replied, trying to brush off the strange feeling that lingered.
But just as she was about to continue, her attention was captured by three students walking across the compound. From their uniforms, she recognized them as students from Robin High, but it was one boy in particular who drew her gaze. He was tall and ruggedly handsome, with an air that commanded attention. As a tall girl herself, she was immediately fascinated by his height. The moment Layo saw him, her breath caught, and her concentration shattered.
Amaka and a few other girls noticed him as well, and Amaka was quick to make her thoughts known. "Our Father who art in heaven!" she said dramatically. "Hallowed be Thy name for creating a tall human being like this."
Layo’s usual calm nature wavered, her heart skipping a beat as her eyes lingered on the boy. He wasn’t conventionally handsome, but he had an undeniable charm—a bit of a “bad boy” vibe with his golden hair and the studs he wore.
Amaka nudged her, laughing. "Layo! Madam ‘I can’t catch feelings’ has been caught!"
Layo laughed nervously, her hands shaking as she tried to refocus on her project. But it was clear that the arrival of the Robin High student had left her feeling a bit unsteady. Though the Biology Fair was still in full swing around her, with students buzzing with excitement, for Layo, the weekend's excitement was now tinged with an unexpected and powerful attraction she hadn’t been prepared for. She had come ready to face an academic challenge—not an emotional one.
Who is this guy? she wondered.
