The morning sunlight filtered gently through the bedroom curtains into the room as Ade quietly finished getting dressed for work. He glanced over at Tomike, who lay curled up on the bed, her breathing soft and steady. A pang of worry flashed across his face as he remembered the past few days, but he pushed it aside, focusing instead on what he hoped would be a turning point.
He moved closer, reaching out to tap her shoulder lightly. She stirred, slowly opening her eyes.
“Good morning, babe,” he whispered with a gentle smile.
Tomike blinked, her voice soft and weary. “Good morning.”
Ade crouched down beside her, his expression warm. “Are you awake?”
She nodded, propping herself up slightly. “Yes.”
With a hopeful smile tugging at the corners of his lips, he continued, “I made reservations for us at our favorite spot.”
He had a talk with Harmony some days back... the conversation was not a very pleasant one but if he wanted his marriage to work, he had to make that evening happen for them.
“Are you serious?”
“Yes, babe.” He replied hoping she wouldn't turn it down.
Tomike’s face softened, a small smile breaking through her tired expression. “That’s so thoughtful of you. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome,” he replied, his eyes never leaving hers.
She hesitated for a moment, biting her lip. “Adeoluwa… aren’t you mad at me?”
Ade looked at her, surprised. “For what?”
“I came home drunk a few days ago, and you haven’t said anything about it since,” she said, her voice tinged with guilt.
Ade reached for her hand, his tone gentle but firm. “You’re my wife, Tomike. You’re not a drunk. Before that night, you’d never even touched alcohol. This is my judgment: we are followers of Christ, so please, don’t get drunk again. Jesus wouldn’t be happy about it.” Ade said with a smile.
Tomike’s lips curved into a small smile, her eyes filling with gratitude. “I promise I’ll never do it again.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Tomike Sobola,” he said, his voice light with affection. “I’ll see you at 8 p.m. tonight. Don’t forget—it’s a proper dinner, so look good.”
She grinned, nodding. “I will.”
With a final smile, he exited the room, leaving her sitting there, feeling slightly guilty about how she had been treating him.
As she settled back into bed, her phone began to ring. She glanced at the screen, seeing Clara’s name flash up.
She answered the call.
“Hey, baby girl. Good morning,” Clara’s voice chirped over the phone.
“Good morning, baby girl,” Tomike replied, her voice still a bit sleepy.
Clara paused, picking up on her tone. “This one you’re sounding like this… are you okay?”
Tomike sighed, rubbing her forehead. “I’m just waking up… and, well, husband issues.”
“Hmmm…” Clara murmured knowingly.
Tomike let out a small laugh. “Which one is ‘hmmm’ now?”
Clara’s voice turned more serious. “Babe, it is well. But I actually needed to tell you something. I’m trying again.”
Tomike blinked, confused. “Trying what?”
“Trying to pick this relationship thing up again,” Clara replied.
Tomike’s confusion quickly melted into joy as she processed her friend’s unexpected news. “Awwww, baby…” she cooed, feeling a warm happiness for Clara.
Clara laughed softly from the other end of the line. “Yes, babe.”
Tomike couldn’t contain her curiosity. “With who?”
“Umm… it’s Liam,” Clara replied, her voice carrying a hint of shyness.
“Wait, Liam? As in my Harmony’s Liam?” Tomike’s eyebrows shot up, shock clear in her voice.
Clara chuckled. “Yes.”
“Wait oo!” Tomike exclaimed, sitting up straighter. “I thought you guys closed that chapter way back in school? You mean you haven’t gotten over him all this time?”
Clara sighed, her tone soft and nostalgic. “Well… we exchanged contacts the other day when we met at your place. One thing led to another, he asked me out, and now we’re here.”
Tomike laughed in delight. “Are you serious? And you did all of that without me?”
“Babe, I’m sorry! It all happened so fast. Honestly, it still feels like a dream, but so far, it’s been… really beautiful.”
“Oh, that is so sweet,” Tomike sighed dreamily. “We all know Liam is a good man. He’s going to take care of you, unlike my husband here.”
Clara’s voice softened with understanding. “Babe, your husband is a good man, too. And you know what? Liam is teaching me that holding on to the past keeps us from embracing the blessings of today. That applies to you too.”
Tomike blinked, taken aback by her friend’s words. “Is this really Clara talking?”
“Yes, it is me,” Clara replied, her voice firm but gentle. “Dwelling on past disappointments will only cloud our vision of the joy ahead. It’s time to let go and let God.”
Tomike let out a small laugh, genuinely moved. “What has this guy done to you in such a short time? Ah ahn…”
“Love, my dear. Love,” Clara responded with a warmth that was almost tangible. “This love has shown me that the past was only a lesson, not a life sentence. Don’t let yesterday’s hurt dictate today’s happiness. Enjoy life with your husband. He loves you.”
Tomike leaned back, letting Clara’s words sink in. She smiled lazily. “I’ll think about it. But you...just enjoy your Liam. He’s a good man. And finally, eh! My friend don fall in love! We’ll drink wine on top this matter when I see you, abeg!”
The two friends laughed and bantered happily,...
Tomike could sense a new beginning for her friend, and somehow she wished the same could be possible for her.
She wished Harmony was Ade and the dinner was with Harmony not with Ade...
If Wishes were Horses....
