The silence in the room was thick with tension, broken only by his quiet, continuous desperate plea.
“Babe, I’m sorry. That’s all I can say..please forgive me. I got all wrapped up in this situation because I didn’t want to hurt her again.”
Evelyn stood her body trembling as she struggled to keep her composure. The tears flowing and unstoppable. She wiped at her face, but the tears kept coming. She was fight a war within; the war between being a forgiving wife or a betrayed one.
“I understand that you were trying to fix something from your past by trying to help her heal, but healing won’t come by reopening old wounds,” she said, her voice cracking with emotion.
Harmony looked up, the regret on his face almost unbearable for her to see. “Evelyn, I promise, I didn’t intend to hurt you in any way.”
She sniffed, tears streaming freely down her face now, no longer holding back the pain that had been simmering beneath the surface. “I know neither you nor her intended to hurt me,” she said, her voice trembling. “I guess she’s just crying for a resolution because I can only imagine the pain of an unresolved ending. Harmony , I am not going to judge or criticise her, because how could you have just walked out on a woman you promised marriage without a proper goodbye. You were with her for four years...who does that? " She paused to wipe at her tears, but more kept coming, her breath hitching. “But still, our love, our lives, and that of our kids cannot be compromised because of her.”
“I’m sorry…” Harmony whispered again, his voice broken.
Evelyn took a step closer, her body shaking as the full weight of her emotions poured out. “Harmony, guilt over a past relationship is a heavy burden, but Christ has called you to freedom.”
She let out a sob, trying to keep herself steady. “I’m hurt, deeply hurt. But I won’t criticize you too” she choked, her voice thick with tears. “I’ll try to be understanding… I’ll let you release this guilt before God… and let you end what you didn’t end well before.” She swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper now. “It’s obvious that you and that woman need closure.”
Evelyn wept like a baby...
Harmony nodded, his heart breaking as he saw her pain laid bare before him. Every tear that fell felt like a stab to his own heart, knowing that his actions had caused this.
Evelyn turned, attempting to walk away, desperate for space to gather herself. But before she could leave, Harmony gently grabbed her hand, his eyes pleading. “Please don’t leave me,” he whispered, his voice trembling with desperation.
Evelyn looked at him, her face tear-streaked, her lips quivering. “You’re my husband,” she said through the tears, her voice soft but broken. “And I’m not going anywhere.” She paused, her tears still falling. “But I need an hour or two to be alone, Harmony. I just… I just need some time with God.”
She gently pulled her hand from his, her heart heavy as she walked out of the room, tears streaming down her face in waves. As the door closed behind her, she collapsed against it, sobbing uncontrollably. She had wanted to be strong, to hold it together, but the depth of her hurt was too much. She covered her face with her hands and cried, releasing the pain that had been building up inside her.
Harmony sat in the silence she left behind, the sound of her sobs still echoing in his ears, each one piercing his heart. He knew he had to fix this, not just for Evelyn, but for their family. But in this moment, all he could feel guilt..

The knock on the door came violently, jolting Ade from his quiet thoughts. His heart raced as he rushed to the door and pulled it open. There, standing in the doorway, was Tomike—staggering, her clothes disheveled, her eyes wild and unfocused. The unmistakable smell of alcohol wafted from her, and Ade’s heart sank. This wasn’t Tomike. She never drank.
“Tomike!” he exclaimed, grabbing her as she almost collapsed into his arms. He dragged her inside, his mind racing with confusion and fear. “Tomike, what is happening to you? You never drink!” His voice was panicky, almost pleading. “God, please, heal my marriage. Heal my home. I am tired. What is this?”
Tomike slurred her words, echoing his own plea as she began to cry.
“What is this? I am tired. You all hate me. You hate me. You don’t want me.”
Her thoughts drifted to the past, to Harmony, to the years of waiting, of disappointment. The memories flooded her mind...her visits to his mother’s house, the promises he had made, and the painful silence of many years that followed. She broke down further, her sobs wracking her body..
“You don’t want me,” she cried out, her voice breaking. “All of you hate me. I am underserving, I am unwanted!"
Ade knelt beside her, his heart breaking at the sight of his wife unraveling before him.
“I don’t hate you, Tomike. I love you. I’m here.” His voice trembled, his desperation palpable.
“God, please, help me. I don’t understand anything.”
Tomike’s sobs intensified, her words barely coherent as she spiraled deeper into the pain of her unresolved past. She was drowning in her sorrow, and Ade, though beside her, felt helpless. He held her as she cried, pleading with God to show him how to heal this brokenness.
