“So, you broke things off with her?” she asked, her voice heavy with disbelief.
Harmony looked down, avoiding her gaze. “Not exactly,” he admitted. “I just… never saw her again.”
Aviela shook her head in frustration. “Ha! Daddy…”
“Look,” Harmony began defensively, “Grandma was supposed to handle it. She said she would do all the talking.”
Aviela raised an eyebrow, her skepticism clear. “Well, it seems like Grandma did more harm than good. And now, the past is haunting your present. This is going to hurt Mom, and it’s going to hurt Oliver.”
Harmony rubbed the back of his neck, his mind racing. “But… I’m just friends with her, Aviela. That’s all.”
Aviela crossed her arms, her gaze unwavering. “Daddy, you always taught me not to sniff around food if I wasn’t going to eat it. You gave me the courage to face Francis and tell him that I wasn’t ready for what he was offering at thirteen.”
Harmony’s eyes softened. “Were you able to talk to him?”
“I did, Dad,” Aviela replied, standing tall. “Because what God and my parents think of me is more important than any ungodly friendship.”
Harmony sighed, his shoulders sagging. “But I can’t afford to be her enemy. I don’t want to hurt her.”
Aviela stepped closer, her voice firm but gentle. “Well, you can be friends from afar. She doesn’t need to be sending you funny messages.”
Harmony’s face froze. “You… read my messages?”
“Accidentally, Dad. I didn’t do it intentionally. I was using your phone for an assignment the other day.”
Harmony rubbed his forehead, guilt flooding his mind. “Oh God… I’m so sorry you saw that.”
“It’s fine, Dad,” Aviela said softly, her tone filled with understanding. “But Mommy taught Oliver and I something. She said that we can still be at peace with people we don’t want to share special bonds with. I believe her. Francis and I are still friends, but now we have boundaries, and we’re both focused.”
Harmony nodded slowly, absorbing her wisdom. “I see.”
Aviela took a deep breath. “Daddy, you need to set boundaries and refocus your relationship with this woman before Mommy finds out.”
Harmony’s heart raced, fear gripping him at the thought of telling his wife. “The fact that I have to tell your mom… it scares me.”
Aviela smiled faintly, her strength shining through. “You don’t have to be scared, Daddy. Just do the needful.”
Harmony looked at his daughter, a mix of pride and humility overwhelming him. “I will,” he said, his voice firm with resolve. “I promise you, I will do right by your mom, by you, and by your brother. You guys are everything to me. I love you.”
Aviela smiled, nodding in approval. “We love you too, Dad.”
*****
Later that night, Harmony stood quietly in the bedroom, his mind racing as he had gathered the courage to speak to his wife. Evelyn stood with her back to him, her shoulders tense, her hands shaking. The silence in the room was thick, you could almost slice through it.
Tears streamed down Evelyn’s face.
Harmony’s voice was soft, filled with guilt. “Babe, I’m sorry.”
Evelyn didn’t turn around. Her voice trembled, carrying the full force of her hurt. “When were you going to say something to me about it, Harmony? When?”
Harmony lowered his head, shame coursing through him. He had never seen Evelyn like this—so quiet, so deeply hurt. His chest tightened as the reality of his actions began to sink in fully. This was the woman who had stood by him, the mother of his children, his partner in everything, the woman who showered him praises everyday, the woman who was ready to tell the world about how amazing he was, even if he wasn't half as Amazing as she believes. The woman who brings the atmosphere of Joy into his life everyday...And he had failed her.
“I didn’t mean for things to get this far,” Harmony whispered. “I was going to tell you, I just… didn’t know how.”
Evelyn let out a bitter laugh, finally turning to face him. Her eyes were red from crying, her face a mixture of pain and anger. “Didn’t know how? Harmony, we’ve been married for years! How do you not know how to talk to your wife?”
Harmony winced at the truth in her words. “I was scared, Evelyn. I didn’t want to hurt you.”
Evelyn took a step closer, her voice low and trembling. “But you’ve already hurt me. Keeping this from me...letting it fester like this...hurts more than you telling me the truth.”
Harmony swallowed hard, his eyes searching her face for any sign of forgiveness. “I never stopped loving you, Evelyn. This was a mistake, I admit that. But I love you and the kids more than anything.”
Evelyn stood still, her heart torn between the love she had for her husband and the betrayal she felt.
