15 years Earlier...

Harmony sat under a tree. It was the campus relaxation center. It was the place where everyone came if they wanted some quiet. He was staring intently at the ring in his hand. It wasn’t much, but it was symbolic. A promise, a declaration of his love for Tomike. The past four years with her had been some of the best of his life, and that night, he was going to ask her to marry him...not with the intention of rushing into marriage, but to assure her that no matter what the future held, he wanted her by his side forever.

As he stared at the ring, rehearsing his proposal, a hand tapped him on the shoulder scaring the hell out of him.

Startled, Harmony jumped to his feet, His younger brother, Liam, stood watching him with amused curiosity.

“You go close your eyes like that when you propose?” Liam asked

“Liam! How many times do I have to tell you to stop sneaking up on me?"

Liam smirked. “If I don't sneak up on you, who will?"

Harmony, still flustered, rolled his eyes. “Liam, shut up. Shut up and go back to your student hostel. Leave me to my solitude"

Liam raised an eyebrow in genuine surprise. “Wait, you’re really going to propose?”

Harmony shot him an annoyed glance. “What kind of question is that? Yes, I am.”

Liam whistled, clearly impressed. “Wow! My brother’s about to become a married man. I didn’t know you were serious!”

Harmony shook his head, exasperated. “Liam, you have no sense, sincerely. Where would I get the money to marry her right now? I just want to let her know that no matter what happens, I’m going to marry her.”

Liam laughed, nodding as if it all made sense. “Oh, okay. I get it now. She’s put in the work...four years of her life. Now she’s about to collect the University paper certificate and relationship assurance. She deserves it.”

Harmony gave him a sidelong glance. “Liam, what do you want? Please, get to the point and be fast.”

Liam’s face turned serious for the first time  “Mommy called... Mommy wants to see us...both of us.”

Harmony froze, suspicion creeping into his tone. “Mommy? What did you tell her?”

Liam shrugged. “I should be asking you that question, Bros. She said something about your last discussion and that it’s a matter of life and death.”

Harmony groaned in frustration. “I have plans with Tomike tonight. I can’t deal with this right now.”

“This is the afternoon. Campus isn’t far from home. We can go now and still make it back in time for your dinner date,” Liam said, trying to be the voice of reason.

Harmony let out a deep sigh, rubbing his forehead. “I really don’t like this at all, Liam. Honestly, this home close to campus has been hell for  four years, Mommy will just call someone and tell you 'Come home'!"

Liam stepped closer, his voice lowering. “She said your phone hasn’t been going through. And that we need to see her immediately.”

Harmony clenched his jaw, feeling the tug of obligation against his plans. “Not today… not today,” he muttered under his breath.

*****
The moment Harmony got home, his mother dragged her two sons into her bedroom as if they were still children under her roof. Harmony and Liam exchanged puzzled glances, unsure of what to expect.

“Mommy, seriously now,” Harmony began, frustration creeping into his voice. “You called me here, and I’m here. What’s this all about? You’ve been dragging me around like I did something wrong.”

Their mother spun around, her eyes sharp as she pointed at Harmony. “Where did you keep your phone, you this boy? I’ve been calling you since morning!”

Harmony held up his hands defensively. “Sorry, Mommy. I didn’t see your calls. I’m here now, so let’s talk. I have a dinner date with Tomike tonight.”

At the mention of Tomike’s name, their mother’s face darkened slightly. “Exactly why I called you here.”

Liam, who had been sitting silently, couldn’t help but interject. “So why am I here then?”

Their mother shot him a sharp look. “Shut up and listen to me...both of you.”

Harmony’s patience was wearing thin. “Mommy, what’s going on? Did something happen?”

“No,” she replied firmly, her tone softening slightly. “But the last time you brought Tomike here, I could tell things were getting serious between you two.”

Harmony frowned. “Getting serious? Mommy, we’ve been serious from the beginning!"

"Ha! Very serious oo.” Liam added

Their mother sighed deeply and sat down, her eyes fixed on Harmony. “Listen to me, Harmony. If truly I am your mother, from this moment on, things need to stop being serious between the two of you.”

Both Liam and Harmony stared at her, their mouths open in shock.

“Is this a joke?” Harmony finally asked, laughing awkwardly. “Mommy, stop it now.”

But their mother wasn’t laughing. The seriousness in her eyes made Harmony’s heart drop.

Harmony’s heart pounded in his chest as his mother’s stern expression deepened. He had never seen her this serious before.

“Who is joking with you, Harmony?” she asked, her voice firm, void of any humor. “This is a very serious matter. I have prayed. My pastor has prayed. And the answer is clear...you and Tomike, it is a no-no. Nothing good can come out of this.”

Liam, who had been sitting back, arms folded, couldn’t help but interject. “So what am I doing here then? This is obviously none of my business.”

His mother shot him a sharp look. “You, you are here to learn. Whoever you want to go into a relationship with, bring them home on time. Don’t wait until things are too deep.”

Liam rolled his eyes. “I’m not ready for any of that right now, Mommy. Money is the only thing on my mind.”

Their mother waved off his comment dismissively. “Whatever, Liam.”

She turned back to Harmony, her eyes narrowing in focus. “As I was saying, Harmony, I asked God to show me who Tomike is, and guess what? I saw Tomike in a vision. She was trying to climb a ladder, but she kept falling. Over and over again. That is a very bad omen. My pastor confirmed it.”

Harmony’s frustration spilled over into a sarcastic response. “Mommy, but I’m not a ladder. I’m a full-grown man!”

“Shut up!” she snapped.

“Don’t joke with this. You will listen to me, and you will do as I say. I am your mother. I gave birth to you, this boy.”

Harmony sighed deeply, shaking his head. “No, Mommy, no. Why didn’t you see this vision when we started this relationship four years ago? Why now? Where do I even start from now? Where does she start from? Mommy, please. How can I tell her we can't be together again?.”

His mother’s expression softened for a brief moment, but her resolve remained firm. “Leave that to me. I will take care of it. You don’t have to tell her anything. I’ll do the talking on your behalf.”

Harmony’s eyes widened with disbelief. “But Mommy, you didn’t help me chase her! I saw her, I liked her, and she agreed. This was our decision!”

His mother shook her head. “And I’m saying no. I’ve prayed about it. She is not your wife. You cannot settle for her. In fact, give me your phone.”

Harmony took a step back, confused. “For what?”

“Bring your phone now,” she said, extending her hand.

Before Harmony could protest further, Liam took the phone from his hand and gave to his mother.

“Mommy, what are you planning to do with it?” Liam asked, sitting up straighter now, sensing the situation was escalating.

“I’m blocking her and deleting her number, and Harmony, if you decide to disobey me, you will never enjoy one day of peace in that home, because I know how I suffered raising both of you after your father left me” their mother said with all seriousness, her fingers moving swiftly over the phone screen.

“Is it that serious?” Liam asked, astonishment coloring his voice.

“Very serious,” she replied without looking up.

Harmony stood frozen as his mother deleted Tomike’s contact with a final tap and tossed the phone back to him. Four years of love, trust, and hope seemed to vanish in an instant, reduced to a simple click. She didn’t spare him a second glance as she walked out of the room, leaving both brothers in stunned silence.

Harmony collapsed into a chair, his heart sinking.

" Bros Harmony, Mommy added a curse to the instruction ooo, it is very deep ooo" Liam said

“Ooooh... ha! Four years. Just like that.”

Liam stood still dazed,  shifting uncomfortably. He placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder, trying to offer some comfort. “Bros Harmony, as difficult as this might be, you know Mommy. She prays, and when she says something like this, she means it. This might really be true.”

Harmony looked up at his brother, his eyes full of anguish. “Meaning what?”

Liam sighed. “Obedience is better than sacrifice.”

Harmony shook his head, his heart breaking. “Ha! Osanobua lahor! This is not fair at all. I can’t tell Tomike that we’re done. I can’t. I love her.”

“You’ll find another woman, Bros. Your woman will come, there are many fishes in the  ocean” Liam said, his tone lightening as he tried to shift the mood. “But for now, I need to find food first. Hunger wan finish me.”

"Mommy, this can not work, I have a date tonight with Tomike.'  Harmony said and in response to that they heard the keys of the door...

" Mommy...What are you doing?" Liam asked as he rushed to the door.

Liam tries opening the door only to find out they have been locked in.

"Momsy, wetin be dis now!" ( Mom, what is this?) Liam said

Harmony rested his back on the bed confused...
