It was the next day after Harmony's birthday, he had just returned from work very tired. His voice was gentle as he called Aviela into the room. “Come in.”
She entered, her eyes downcast. “Welcome home, Daddy,” she greeted him softly.
Harmony smiled, though tiredness clung to his face. “Thank you, Aviela. How are you doing?”
Her reply came almost immediately, and the seriousness of her words made him sit up. “Not fine, Daddy. Someone hurt me.”
Harmony’s heart skipped a beat. His protective instincts kicked in as he leaned forward. “Someone did what? Who is that person? Is it someone from your school?”
Aviela shook her head slowly, her gaze not meeting his. “No, Daddy. It’s someone from here. From our house.”
Harmony raised his eyebrows. “Did your mother do something to you?”
“No, Daddy,” Aviela replied firmly. Then, after a pause, she added, “Can we take a stroll? I want to tell you about the person who hurt me.”
Harmony sighed, too exhausted to entertain what he felt was likely a minor issue. “Tell me who hurt you, Aviela. I’m too tired for a stroll.”
But Aviela persisted, her voice soft yet determined. “Please, Daddy.”
“Who hurt you, Aviela?”
Instead of answering directly, she walked over to the couch and sat down. Her voice broke the silence. “My hero.”
Harmony chuckled, confusion crossing his face. “Your hero? But I am your hero.”
The words hung in the air like a slow revelation. Aviela’s silence, paired with her downcast expression, sent a chill through him. Harmony stared at his daughter, his mind racing.

The two walked hand in hand, side by side through the quiet estate, the night air cool against their skin.
"Daddy…”
“Avvy?” Harmony replied, his voice soft.
“You haven’t asked about Francis recently.”
Harmony stopped in his tracks, his mind quickly trying to connect the dots. “Did he hurt you?”
“No, Daddy,” she said, her voice steady. “He’s not my hero.”
Harmony let out a small laugh of relief. “Oh, oh, right. Sorry about that. So, what did your hero do? Did I forget to buy something you asked for? Did I break a promise?”
Aviela shook her head, stopping to look up at him, her face illuminated by the streetlights. “No, Daddy. You’re a good father. You pay so much attention to us, and you’ve shown us so much love. You’ve always been my hero. You’re Oliver’s bestie and Mommy’s sweetheart.”
Harmony chuckled softly at her words, warmth filling his chest. But then, Aviela’s next words froze him where he stood.
“But things are about to fall apart, Dad.”
Harmony stopped abruptly, his eyes narrowing in confusion. “What? Aviela, what are you talking about?”
She turned to face him fully, her voice calm but her words sharp. “Daddy, I know there’s a new woman.”
Harmony’s breath caught in his throat. He looked down at his daughter, his mind spinning. “Aviela…”
“Did Mommy do something wrong?” she asked, her voice tinged with sadness.
“No, no, Mommy and I are fine. Very fine,” Harmony replied, his voice shaky, trying to hold onto the thread of control slipping through his fingers.
“So why are you seeing another woman privately? Why do I hear your chuckles behind the kitchen windows at night after everyone must have gone to bed” Aviela asked, her voice cutting through the night air with clarity.
Harmony couldn’t speak for a moment. His daughter’s question was too direct, too honest. He sighed, his hand tightening around hers.
“Avvy…” He hesitated, struggling with how to explain, how to soften the truth. “Tomike is an old friend. I mean… we were a thing, years back.”
Aviela blinked, processing his words. “By ‘a thing’ you mean…?”
Harmony swallowed hard, his mouth suddenly dry. “Umm… I was supposed to marry her.”
“So she was your girlfriend?” Aviela’s voice was steady, but the weight of her words hung between them.
Harmony nodded, shame filling his heart. “Was, emphasis on was.”
Aviela paused, then asked, “So what happened? Why didn't you end up together?"
Harmony sighed deeply, his eyes closing for a moment. The memories of his past with Tomike flooded back, mingling with his present guilt. His daughter was too young to carry this burden, yet here she was, confronting him with a maturity that cut straight through his defenses.
He opened his eyes and looked down at Aviela, his heart heavy. How could he explain his failures, his broken promises, and his unresolved feelings? How could he tell his daughter that her hero wasn’t as perfect as she had believed?
“Avvy,” he began, his voice barely above a whisper, “it’s complicated. But I’ll try to explain.”
