My reverend's son 7
PART 7
"MY REVEREND'S SON"

The Estate Occupants knew something evil had come into their serene space, or what else would you call over 100 angry looking youths with machetes. Everyone ran into their homes locking their doors... People parked their cars and ran into different hiding spots.
" Where deir house dey?" ( Where is their house?) My brother asked pushing me to the front.
I pointed to the Close that housed their home and off the boys went...
They left me behind and in that moment I knew I had to do something to save the day. With the way the boys were acting, I could tell that even my Reverend's life would be in danger.
" Gbadebo!" The name my brother respected in this world dropped in my heart....
Gbadebo was the only friend of my brother that made sense. Gbadero was my brother's childhood friend who unlike my brother pursued their dream of becoming lawyers.
He was a practicing lawyer.
I quickly dialed his number.
" Hello Janet! Happy New Year!" He said excitedly
I had to cut to the chase.
" Bros! The year is not looking happy. Henry was killed overnight and the suspect is my Reverend's son. Brother Peter and over 100 boys are presently in my Reverend's estate. Please call him to stop these boys and let the police handle things."
"Slow down and say what you said again" Gbadebo asked.
I took my time to explain things to him including sending him pictures of the war my brother had brought to my Reverend's house...
Gbadebo dropped the call and in less than five minutes I saw the effect.
Brother Peter told all the boys to be quiet for a while and he spoke...
"My brothers... Let's keep our swords, my very close brother who is a Lawyer just spoke to me and he said I should not mess up the case. He said we should just stay put , call the police to come pick up the Killer."

We were having breakfast already, but I knew there was something off about Ademide. He was not his chatty self, even my mother noticed...
" Ademide, you are looking dull. You should have stayed the night at home. You forced yourself to the vigil, and it is obvious on your face that you are stressed"
"Mum, I am fine" Ademide snapped.
That was a first and it sounded strange to everyone at the table. Ademide never snapped at Mum, it was all kisses and hugs between him and my mum. We all stopped eating at that moment and all eyes directed at him.
" I am sorry" He quickly corrected himself.
Everywhere went silent again until Ademide spoke up again...
" I will like to go for a personal retreat."
Mojirade coughed and she almost choked on her food. She knew it was a lie.
" Oluwaseun! New year ! New life!" My mother as always jumped in to validate her son.
" When and Where?" My Father asked
" Today...I will like to go now and I was hoping to go to Benin Republic."
Adepeju laughed her heart out. Mojirade joined her in laughing...
" Retreat in Benin Republic?" I spoke up for the first time and my husband was shocked as well...
My Father was pissed at his usual show of childishness and out of irritation he rose up from the table and walked away from the table up the stairs.
" Muyiwa, this matter doesn't warrant you walking away from the table. Ademide may have a reason why he wants to go to Benin Republic, maybe the atmosphere in Nigeria is polluted for him...
" Polluted!" Adepeju could not hold her tongue. She was my mother's nemesis, the only person to give it to my mother hot hot just like my mother would do to anyone else.
" Mummy, do you mean the opposite? Do you mean to say that Ademide is too polluted for Nigeria" Adepeju said
"If I know your son too well, it is possible there is a destination party happening in that country and he wants to go, so he cooked the lie you would easily fall for" Adepeju added
" Adepeju, can you not meddle in my matter" Ademide said
"'With all pleasure!" Adepeju stood up from the table..
" Today is the first of the year and we should not let the devil have a foothold in this family " I said as the usual quencher of fire..
" Tell that to Mum" Adepeju said as she climbed up the stairs without waiting...
Instead of my mother to chastise Ademide, she turned to him and said softly...
" Ademide, you should have told me this plan of yours and we would have planned it out well. I would have sweet-talked your father into agreement, but you just made a mess of it by bringing it here on the dining table"
Mojirade, the last girl could not take it anymore, she dropped her cutlery, packed her plate and other used plates. She went to the kitchen to clean up. Mojirade was a person of few words.
Suddenly, we started hearing a strange noise in the Estate, like a crowd chanting. The Estate was a quiet place, therefore hearing warlike chants was close to impossible .
The chant-like noise kept getting louder, and we could pick out few words like...
" Oro nla leda...
Reverend pikin don kill Henry
Oro nla leda"
We picked up the words in bits and pieces till it made sense.
