My sister in-law and I 2

MY SISTER-IN-LAW AND I CHAPTER 2 On my hubby’s arrival, he was fed a meal made by his sister as usual. He had his bath and sat down to relax. He asked after his kids and my welfare. I moved closer to him to respond and explain my woes. But yours sincerely already knew my plans and refused me sitting close to him. She sent me on ridiculous errands and gave him another version of what transpired painting me black in the process. He wasn’t angry but neither was he cheerful his countenance had changed. I didn’t know what she told him but the laughter he came home with wasn’t there anymore. He played with his kids and retired for the night. Once again I didn’t get the chance to say anything. But I was determined to explain myself come what may. I woke him up in the middle of the night as that was the only chance i will get. I explain everything that has been happening since he left and the fact I wasn’t given any breathing space nor allowed to cook or do alot of things which I should be doi...

My sister in-law and I 1

MY SISTER-IN-LAW AND I Episode 1 I sometimes wonder why sister-in-law’s or some in-law’s generally like treating their brother’s wives like trash. They just derive joy belittling and making them look stupid. This is the case of Salamatu Suleiman. I was in the village with my siblings and parents. We weren’t well to do but we had enough to weather any storm and still stand tall. Everything was moving fine until a very well to do widower with two little kids approached my dad for my hand in marriage. My mum strongly opposed the marriage, but my dad approved the marriage and in a months time I was married to my husband. My husband though rich was down to earth kind and simplicity personified. I was young and didn’t have much experience taking care of a large house, unlike ours which was very small. I did try my best and he appreciated my efforts. The only issue I had in my marriage was my sister-in-law. She practically ruled the home, owing to the fact that she had bin doing it since he l...

The witch's daughter finale

THE WITCH’S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 9 (THE END) Immediately after the burial, I felt different. I realized I could see other people around around us. I realized I was not the only one who was between the world of the living and that of the dead. There were people there who had not even died; people who had simply disappeared from our world and are now being held captive. Their family had given up on them and might never see them again. It was so scary. Lily came to me and told me that it was time to go. She touched me and I found myself floating. We started flying, she and I; flying back to our world for her to fulfill her diabolical wish of possessing me forever. We flew for several hours and while it was getting dark, we were attacked by other dangerous forces, other demons of the air. Lily fought hard but was almost overcome and defeated when her mum appeared and came to her rescue. She returned back to me tired and angry. Meanwhile, it was almost ten o’clock now. My dad looked at his watc...

The witch's daughter 8

THE WITCH’S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 8 The burial had taken place. Just the pastor, my dad, mum and wife were present. It was done in a secret place behind my father’s house. My wife was simply inconsolable and so was my mother. My dad however, had a grip of himself because of the assurance and reassurances from the pastor. When everything was over, my dad was asked by the pastor to stay behind. “You see, Mr. Peter, I have something to tell you. Something I have never told anyone. Before I became a pastor, I was into the dark arts myself. I learned many things and I know a lot about the underworld. Actually, that has been a plus to my efforts in the constant and never ending fight between good and evil. They say, to catch a thief, you have to think like one.” “How does this help in bringing back my son, Sammy?” My dad asked. “Don’t worry, your son, Sammy Peters will be back. However, you have to do exactly as you are told. You have to be as surgically precise as possible in carrying out my ins...

The witch's daughter 7

THE WITCH'S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 7 My dad was at the premises of the soothsayer now. He wanted to know what had happened to his son, me. He had vowed that no burial will take place until he found out what happened. The soothsayer didn't look like one of those you will find in your villages. He was a handsome well dressed man who lived in a clean house. He was happy to meet my dad and said he was going to help. After my dad had finished explaining the reason for his coming, the soothsayer smiled and spoke. "Your son made a pact with a witch while he was very younger. He took an oath and he thought it was all a joke because of his age. Oaths don't work like that. Things happen differently in the spiritual realm. Now, the witch has come to hunt him. She is the one who killed him. However, all hope is not lost yet. His spirit hangs between the world of the living and the dead. You may lose him if care is not taken." My dad could not believe what he was hearing. I had neve...

The witch's daughter 6

THE WITCH'S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 6 The traditional wedding passed well. I had already done the civil marriage. What was left now was the white wedding. All through the traditional wedding ceremony to my new wife Betty, I was hoping for some sort of interruption from Lily. None came however, much to my relief. I was so happy that she didn't didn't show up. I had spent the whole ceremony being edgy and nervous and looking over my shoulders all the time. Thank God she didn't come to mess up things up for me.  I was thinking that she had finally relented and had gone back to the village or anywhere else to forge a life for herself. However, that was not to be. She had more diabolic and fiendish punishment for a false-hearted buzzard like me. She was a witch's daughter with a dark soul and wouldn't accept defeat so easily. Talking of souls, the covenant I made with her when I was a child had given her access to my soul. It would have been wise to tell my family everythin...

The witch's daughter 5

THE WITCH’S DAUGHTER CHAPTER FIVE It had been 23 years now. I was now a grown man. I was almost thirty years and a lot had happened in my life. I had graduated from the university, had a masters degree and now work as an accountant in a famous bank in the country. I had aslo gotten myself a beautiful girl and we were about to marry. Sorry to disappoint you, my fiancee was not Lily, the witch’s daughter. It was was beautiful girl I had met at the university. Talking about Lily, I hadn’t seen hide nor hair of her for almost 23 years. I had completely lost contact with her. I wondered how big she must be now. However, she had become very remote to me and I hoped and trusted the fact that, she must have forgotten about our foolish oath. But then, in spite of the fact that I hadn’t seen Lily physically, she had been plaguing my dreams. I remember one dream particulary. She appeard to me in my bedroom and told me that she had not forgotten our vows. She said she had come to make me rich so t...

The witch's daughter 4

THE WITCH’S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 4 At my age, I was already engaged to be married to a woman. A woman who had never met my parents and I had never met hers. Very strange. I was just five years old and she was almost five years too. Our union was an unholy one because it was bonded by witchcraft; an oath, not before God but before the powers of darkness. I had quite technically sold my soul to the devil. Yes, if that was not what it was, then what was it? Right now, as I speak, I could be watched by invisible spirits, waiting for me to derail, for me to break the terms of the oath and wring my neck. How did I get here? How did I come about having a teenager’s mind in a child’s body? Children my age are living their lives innocently. Here, I was, battling between a witch, her daughter and the anger of my father should he find out the recent happenings. I had heard stories of invisible spirits, ghost and ghouls, watching people in the dark, waiting to seal their doom. Could I be in the same f...

The witch's daughter 3

THE WITCH’S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 3 The next day, I waited when I was sure her mum must have gone out again and I went to visit again. She was cautiously happy to see me again. She looked like she was a lonely child. Her mum seemed to be doing her very best to keep her away from every type of human contact. That was quite understandable though. She had a deep distrust for anybody. She feared someone could harm her child. “Where is your mum?” I asked. “To the forest, as usual.”’ “Have you eaten?” “Yes.” “You are beautiful.” I said. “Thank you. You are handsome too.” “I want to take you to leave in my house.” I proposed. She laughed so hard that I felt stupid. “My mum will kill you.” She said. “Please, cancel that idea from your mind. You simply don’t know how dangerous my mum is.” “On the contrary, I do and that is the reason I want to take you away from here.” I said. “Forget about it and stop joking. You are just a child. We both are. You can’t take care of me.” “I will talk to my father a...

The witch's daughter 2

THE WITCH’S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 2 Two days later, after we had cleaned the house, we moved in. The first thing my father did was to bring a powerful, local man of God who prayed for the house and poured anointing oil. Feeling secured after the pastor’s prayer, we settled in to begin enjoying our new home. It had been a week now and we hadn’t had any incident. I was already beginning to believe what my father had said about the agent’s stories. As scary as the stories sounded, I still wanted something adventurous to happen and had been disappointed that nothing had happened so far. I loved ghost stories and ghost encounters as long as they don’t kill me. The next day, after my dad had gone to work and my mum and younger sister were having an afternoon nap, I wandered to the back of the house and noticed something I had not noticed since we got there. It was an old house surrounded by a thick bush. The house looked mysterious to me and this increased my curiosity. I wondered why someone wil...

The witch's daughter 1

THE WITCH’S DAUGHTER CHAPTER 1 I was only five years old and we had just moved into that neighbourhood. My father worked at the hospital, which required us to move a lot. The hospital, which was run by a church, had a habit of transferring its hospital staff to a new station every after about six years. That’s how we happened to find ourself in that town and in that neighbourhood. Under normal circumstances, we were supposed to live in the hospital compound. The hospital actually had a compound for its staff. However, we were told it was full. We had no choice but to seek accommodation in town. My family was composed of my dad, mum, younger sister and I. My younger sister was three and had just started school before we were forced to move. My mum was a teacher in the private sector and my dad as you already know, was medical personnel. It was difficult for us to have accommodation. However, my dad was advised to seek the help of a housing agent. While our belongings were packed at the ...

The choirmaster's wife Finale

THE CHOIRMASTER’S WIFE THE END She saw Chris step out of the plaza where his office was located and hurriedly dashed for his car. He was on a call and looked really disturbed. “Follow him” She told the uber driver, as Chris started to drive out of the premises They followed him as he drove through the traffic of people and vehicles, characteristic of the central business district on Fridays as Muslim faithfuls observe their Jumaat prayers. Suddenly there was pandemonium as the sound of heavy gunshot rent the air. People were shouting and running in all directions. Some were going flat on their stomachs – and someone was asking others to do the same. The sound of impatient sirens faint against the heavy noise of gunshots, people opening their cars and fleeing, the scream of people frantically trying to escape – it all looked surreal to her as she looked ahead – at the place where just now, Chris’s car was speeding through. “Chris…Chris..” she muttered “madam, madam, oya come down let’s ...

The choirmaster's wife 4

THE CHOIRMASTER’S WIFE CHAPTER FOUR “I’ll see you tomorrow” the message read Lauren returned her husband’s phone to the desk as she heard his footsteps by the door. She pulled the sheet back over her head and waited. She had just hit the bed when he arrived from work, but she had feigned sleep and shut her eyes tightly. He had come over to the bedside and touched his palm to her forehead, as a mother would do to a child who had complained of fever. That action had warmed her heart and stilled her raging concerns about his fidelity to her. “He still loves me afterall” and she had resolved to give him the benefit of the doubt. But when his phone beeped and she picked it, the message she saw sent her heart sinking again She stretched pretentiously on the bed as he entered the room. “Hey honey.. did I wake you?” He asked as he started towards the large wardrobe. She sat up on the bed and folded her hands across her chest. “We need to talk” she said. He turned to look to look at her, his br...

The choirmaster's wife 2B

THE CHOIRMASTER’S WIFE CHAPTER 2 CONT. Lauren sat still as people thronged out of the hall at the end of service. She usually does this so she wouldn’t have to struggle through the crowd of people pushing through the narrow exits. She would wait until the hall thinned of people and sometimes she would wait around inside the hall for Chris or stroll to the choir stand to exchange a few words with him. Today she sat still, her eyes roving the hall, her thoughts wandering here and there until they settled on the events of the morning – fragment by fragment. “Lord help me” she muttered She stood up and strolled to the front of the aisle where she sat as the hall started to become empty of people. Usually, Chris would be addressing the choir at the end of service, but today he wasn’t there and just a few of the choir members were still on their seat. Most had pulled off their robes, leaving a blend of colorful attires. She wanted to speak with someone but she wasn’t sure how to approach the...

The choirmaster's wife 3

THE CHOIRMASTER’S WIFE CHAPTER 3 She sat facing Chris who stood with his arms folded across his chest. From where she stood at the far exit, Lauren could see they were talking about something that really excited her because her thin voice ringed through the hall with laughter. No doubt, Chris had a great sense of humor. He could make her fall over with laugher at the way he related things and she often told him he would pass for a comedian. But she just wasn’t liking the way he could make another laugh like that. “what could they be discussing that made her so happy? She thought She signed, guilt and shame washing over her then for thinking about Chris in that light. How could se not trust him? Had they not been friends for over three years before they started courting and got married? Surely he wouldn’t think of hurting her ever. Yet she felt tensed with thoughts of what could have gone wrong without her knowing She started to walk towards them, suddenly remembering a line one of thei...

The Choirmaster's wife 2

THE CHOIR MASTER’S WIFE CHAPTER TWO Lauren looked up at him as she stretched the phone over “Oh..I.found it lying here.. I. .guess you forgot it here” she stuttered, her heart beating really fast as a lump rose to her throat. “Yeah..thanks..I thought you had been with it” He said, relaxing his features. She pouted her lips and shook her head as he shot the door and started to leave again, her eyes misty with tears. Then he turned back and said through the windscreen “Aren’t you ready to join the service yet” She merely shook her head, bent so that he won’t see the redness of her eyes. She svcked in some air and exhaled deeply, wiping tears off her eyes gently, careful so that she would not ruin her makeup. The conversation she had just read played a thousand times over in her head before the service started, and each time, she was looking for a good reason to believe that it wasn’t what she was thinking Why would Chris do that to me? Chris was a child of God. She knew he was born again...

The choirmaster's wife 1

THE CHOIRMASTER’S WIFE CHAPTER ONE “Your presence is heaven to me… Your presence is heaven to me… Lauren sang along to the worship song playing on the car stereo as her husband drove them through the free highway of the Gwarinpa expressway on their way to church on a bright Sunday morning. “Oh Jesus..oh Jesus Your presence is heaven to me Oh Jesus” She sang soulfully, and this time, her husband joined her, adding the melody of his tenor part. She felt light with joy, lifting up her hands as the song sank into her spirit. The song came to an end, leaving them full of joy and chattering happily “you sing so well wifey,” Chris said, his eyes still fixed on the road “yeah..thank you hon..I’m getting better at it right” “you should join the choir you know,” he said, covering her hands with his as she turned to him She made a face. Chris had been talking her into joining the choir department in the church even before they got married but she had not thought seriously about it. She had been w...
